Yesterday I was streaming radio out of Knoxville, TN and heard the song
Dwight Yoakam by Sarah Shook and the Disarmers. Has anyone heard it? I had not heard of her before.

They also played Dwight's version of Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues. nice!

Thank you for the Sarah Shook clips. I really like her, AND she’s name dropping Dwight. Also, thanks for mentioning Case/Lang/Veirs, as I had not heard about their project. Here’s a new one from Sarah Jarosz:

Thanks for the link Florida!

The Americana Music Awards nominations were announced. Nice for Margo Price to get a nomination with her album being out only a short while. But, lots of familiar names. Not a lot of diversity, except they finally came up with some new names for the Instrumentalist. I wonder if Sarah Watkins will win due to name recognition. But Florida, your Tedeschi Trucks Band got a nod.

I saw Lucius on Tuesday night at a packed standing room only show. They were excellent! They are ready for a bigger stage because they even had a costume change. Ha. They came out and sang in the audience during one number. And for one song they sat on the edge of the stage and performed, which was probably great for the people in front, but since it wasn't a seated show, that meant the rest of us could not see them.

I really like their latest album and they sound even better live.

Their first release from the album: Born Again Teen:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cq8um27ZRZw

One of my favorites from the new album, Better Look Back (and this was costume #2 at our show).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgI-UMLQceQ

Here is a clip from our show. It's kind of garbled until the 2 min mark.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9rGQACBOZM

And here is one that isn't so pop. Dusty Trails:

I got sucked into the youtube hole. Two Americana tributes to Prince.

OCMS and Margo Price doing Purple Rain

Chris Stapleton - Nothing Compares 2 U

And here's Chris' tribute to Merle!

Howdy IOWA -
It's been way too long since I've popped in here. I've thought of you multiple times, but nothing musical has happened to drive me to post. Thanks for the Americana awards listings and the song links. Like a good doobie, I listened to all of them. Smile

I have snagged some good music recently, so will make a point to get back on here. Hope you are having a great summer!

I just bought front row seats at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall to see Sara Jarosz and Parker Millsap on September 30. I am excited about this one!

And I'm so jealous! That should be a great show and good job on the front row seats!

Hello, by the way. I haven't done much, music wise, this summer. Marty Stuart is playing a free show at the fair so we will probably go to that (unless it's 100 degrees!). Can't believe how quickly the summer is flying by.

How was the trip to NY?

I was in Florida a week last month for work, but the other side of the state- St. Pete. I can now say I've had grouper. Smile

I read that the female member of Houndmouth has left the group. Bummer!

Pray tell what new music you've enjoyed. I'm hopelessly behind.

New York was great! I had a blast running around the city with my friend. It’s nice over on the gulf side of Florida. The Panhandle area in particular has lovely beaches. Grouper is a good fish, and fake grouper abounds! Whenever they run stings, they catch a lot of places serving fake versions. You know you are getting real grouper when you pay $22 or higher for a serving.

I had not heard about the Houndmouth girl. Very disappointing as she added so much to the group, and I really enjoyed the songs featuring her. They played “Gasoline” on Cinemax’s “Outcast” series recently.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBw6RSEFVU0

Did you see where Dwight is an artist at the Americana festival next month? He’ll be featuring songs from “Swimmin’ Pools, Movie Stars” which includes bluegrass interpretations from his catalogue. How long have we been clamoring for a bluegrass CD? Too back it won’t be new music, but should be good nonetheless.

New Music:
Courtney Marie Andrews – I’m enjoying several songs from her new album “Honest Life.” She has beautiful tone.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZBCGCR_kxY

Kelsey Waldon – I’m enjoying this Kentucky girl’s entire album “I’ve Got a Way.”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKd7RF2wRrI

Jonah Tolchin – He’s got a new one out, “Thousand Mile Night.”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugXHNlMQPA0

Did you go see Marty?

Well, now I'm not sure if I had real grouper or not! Fake grouper, who knew?

Enjoy Austin! I hope you make it out for some music. Does Dale Watson still do his weekly show at the Continental Club? It would be great if Bruce Robison & Kelly Willis had a show during your stay.

Parker Millsap will be here in November but as the opener to . . . JJ Grey. It's right after Thanksgiving so I'll try to make it, even though I'm not the JJ Grey fan that you are.

Marty & the Superlatives were great! It was a humid night so I always feel sorry for bands in their suits.

Thanks for all the links. I will check them all out. Well, yes, we've been wanting a Dwight bluegrass album for years but, like you, I would have liked either covers of other songs we haven't heard him do or some originals with maybe just a couple of covers of his own songs. And I loved when he sang Sunny Side of the Mountain concert so that would have been great to hear recorded . . . the list goes on and on. Love the name of the album though! And I guess we do get our wish of a Dwight bluegrass album so we shouldn't complain (too much!).

Here is the track listing. Purple Rain will be interesting:

What I Don't Know
Free To Go
Sad, Sad Music
These Arms
I Wouldn't Put It Past Me
Listen
Two Doors Down
Guitars, Cadillacs
Home For Sale
Please, Please Baby
Gone (That'll Be Me)
Purple Rain

And now I have to post a snippit of Sunny Side of Mountain that our sweet tnacbell Crying or Very sad posted:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLn0zhJ6V30

The last season of Rectify starts in October! Have you watched any of Peaky Blinders? It has music you like (Jack White/ Black Keys) even though it's set in 20's Britain.

Dwight was on NPR yesterday. Here is a link to the interview both audio and transcript :

http://www.npr.org/templates/transcript/transcript.php?storyId=494118725

Florida, season two of Peaky Blinders had a Laura Marling song and Julie/Buddy Miller's All my Tears performed by Ane Brun (I was unfamiliar with her).

Ha! Just in case you ever make it back to Florida:
Tips For Avoiding Fake Grouper article from the University of Florida
http://collier.ifas.ufl.edu/SeaGrant/pubs/Tips%20for%20avoiding%20fake%20grouper%20Fact%20Sheet.pdf

I looked at the Club Continental schedule and Dale is still on it. Unfortunately, the hotel where we are staying isn’t close by, so any visit will have to be intentional. Everything was sold out near the music district, so apparently you have to book very early.

JJ Grey and Parker Millsap . . . that’s a combination I wouldn’t have predicted, but I can see how they might appeal to each other’s fans. It will expose Parker to a little different audience and allow him to expand his fan base. To be honest, while I really liked JJ’s early music and his album “Lochloosa” in particular, I haven’t been as interested in his later releases. Speaking of JJ, The organizers of the two festivals (SpringFest and MagFest) in Suwanee Music Park have disassociated with the music park and are moving their festival to the St. Augustine Amphitheater. MagFest (Magnolia Festival) is to have an abbreviated, one-day version this October and then longer extended versions forth going. As such, I purchased the one-day ticket. JJ Grey is headlining and then some of the other usual type of acts found at the festivals. After I bought tickets, I saw where a replacement Americana festival will continue to take place at the music park on the same competing dates, with Jim Lauderdale and most of the regulars still participating. I’ll have to look more closely about what is happening when SpringFest rolls around.

So glad you enjoyed Marty & the Superlatives, they always put on a good show.

While I am enjoying Dwight’s new album, overall I am not very excited about it, which is probably more likely to happen to a “super fan” as we struggle to temper our great expectations. That being said, I would love to see him perform a bluegrass only concert. I wonder if he will be touring on this album and if he would continue to do his regular arrangements as well as offering a bluegrass segment?

Yay! Rectify! I was wondering about this show, because it has been so long since it’s been on. I look forward to seeing its conclusion. I am not familiar with Peaky Blinders and will check it out. I generally like shows that feature my brand of music! Funny how that works!

National Park Radio – I love this video . . . there’s just something about driving through the desert.

Florida, I'm assuming all went well at your place during the hurricane. I'm glad it wasn't as bad as they predicted.

I think your front row seats for Dale/ Elizabeth Cook Well, I think your front row seats at Ponte Vedra Concert Hall will be even better than seeing him in Austin. That is great and finding friends to share it with is always an added bonus.

How was the Sarah Jarosz/Parker Millsap show?

It's interesting that the musicians decided to stick with the location instead of the festival/promoters in the SpringFest situation. Does the new location fit the festival vibe? We now have an Americana Festival just south of here but I have yet to make it there yet. It's also at an amphitheater but really just a graded hill type place. No formal seating like your amphitheater.
You can see from the image below that there is only one tree. So trying to get someone to go sit in a field all day (you are not allow to bring in chairs -although in looking at this photo it appears someone did!) in the hot August sun to hear bands they've never heard of has not been successful so far!

I agree with you on Dwight's new album. It just doesn't excite me like I thought a bluegrass Dwight album would. A bluegrass song of Jim Lauderdale's was on the tv folk station I listen to sometimes and it reminded me how much I like those bluegrass albums of his and how I wish I felt the same about Dwight's. I did really like the acoustic album he put out but for this one I really think it would have been better with some originals. Does it sound too slick? None of them give me that feel of Miner's Prayer or Traveler's Lantern that I was looking for. And, actually, wouldn't this record be geared more towards the super fan? A wouldn't think bluegrass album would likely reel in any causal listener. But yes, we super fans can be hard to please when we've been listening to him since 1986 and have heard such great things from him.

LOVE Traveler's Lantern.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxXecaciWek

Dwight will be on Drunk History tonight! Comedy Central.

Thanks for the link to the National Park Radio video. I'm embarrassed at how long it took me to figure out that was the name of the group! I liked it and now it makes me wish I had a trip to Santa Fe or the Southwest planned. Sigh.

Peaky Blinders is a show about gangsters in Birmingham, England after WWI. While I'm kind of tired of gangster plots, the acting and some of the writing is good. It's been filling the void for me this summer.

Americana Music Awards and Music Fest

Winners:
Album of the Year
Something More Than Free -- Jason Isbell, Produced by Dave Cobb

Song of the Year
"24 Frames" -- Jason Isbell, Written by Jason Isbell

Artist of the Year
Chris Stapleton

Duo/Group of the Year
Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell

Emerging Artist of the Year
Margo Price

Instrumentalist of the Year
Sara Watkins

I forgot NPR was streaming it live so I just caught the last new minutes. I missed Dwight's performance. George Strait presented Jim Lauderdale with Wagonmaster Lifetime achievement award and then sang "King of Broken Hearts' which made me think of Forest arguing with someone on the old Dwight forum about Jim singing it better. Smile

I found this article about Americanfest interesting. I didn't realize there was a competing fest right nearby and with it being produced in part by Justin Timberlake it might make for a some competition. Although Americanafest could still get the artists for Wed/Fri nights and they could then head over to the other fest, unless there are no compete clauses or something. Interesting.

http://www.tennessean.com/story/money/2016/09/19/americanafest-flourishes-face-challenge/90704452/

I did read some about this years' fest and even though at times I wished we'd waited one more year I'm not disappointed we went last year. Yes, we potentially could have seen Dwight in a club show setting - his set was at the Mercy Lounge. But it was on the night of the awards show and we remember having to wait to get in there after the awards show and how far back we were once we got in. I'm not sure the experience would have beat being on the rail at the festival in Florida. And if we had gone to the Dwight show would we have been disappointed to miss the surprise show by Jason Isbell, Shovels and Rope and Steve Earle at a bar near the Ryman? The non-festival shows are kind of annoying when there are already way more shows than a person can see as part of the festival.

And yes, Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson played the Aussie lunch this year (dang, that would have been good to see) and Robbie Fulks played the lunch at the small record store we went to last year. But if we didn't go last year we wouldn't have seen Lindi Ortega who never tours anywhere around here or Corb Lund. I think the host hotel was moved back to the Sheraton and I liked our hotel right next door to the host hotel last year. So yes, there were some opportunities missed by not going this year but I had a great time last year and am not sorry we went.

This video of Tami Neilson at American Fest. Great voice!

Howdy Girls!

I'm so totally defunct. Sorry for my absence. But I do indeed continue to exist! I've got a lot of reading to do to catch up with what y'all have been doing here of late.

Just now heard about the new Dwight album, "Swimmin' Pools And Movie Stars" which I see y'all have been discussing. I'll be placing my order for the new album here real quick, but I just wanted to share this link to what appears to be the album release party...y'all may have already posted this link but I just wanted to make sure you saw it before it potentially disappears as youtube videos are often want to do.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pw5X8sQrNhk

That version of "Listen" is incredible. I intend to snag the audio from this concert and turn it into a CD/MP3 file pronto.

So anywho, it's so good to see y'all still hangin' in there posting the good word about real country music on a continuing basis. As for me, I'm still semi retired. I work 20 hours a week at the local Lowes here in Lewes, DE. It gives me money for gas, groceries and beer...what more does a guy need?

So I've listened to the album now. I have to agree with y'all's assessment. It's a bit too clean, to cold, to "produced"...no rawness whatsoever. Dwight would have better served with the sound of Steve Earle's collaboration with the Del McCoury Band. "The Mountain", which of course was a collection of songs written specifically for the album. The whole "One Mic - No B.S." concept of that album was spot on.

Have y'all discussed the latest release form Wayne "More Of The Same" Hancock?
http://www.waynehancock.com/music.html
It's really quite good. Nothing ever really changes with Wayne. Every song could fit perfectly on any of his albums, but the man knows his niche very well and he's honed it to a fine edge.

Howdy!

FORREST –
Great to hear from you! I guess we are all on the same page about the bluegrass album from Dwight that we have been dreaming about for years, or dare I say decades. While we are most definitely a hard-to-please audience, a handful of new songs would have been appreciated. And I sincerely doubt another non-bluegrass artist will ever reach the peak of “The Mountain.”

Regarding Wayne Hancock, upon the release of his new album, after sampling a couple songs to ensure he was still on the same path, I purchased his album in its entirety without going through all the songs, which is indeed a rarity for me these days. He never fails to please. It’s refreshing that he doesn’t feel the need to “grow” or change into something else. He is alone in that niche he has created for himself and can be depended on to deliver something solid. He’s been on my list of artists I want to see live for many years now. Wish he would come on down.

IOWA -
Hurricane Matthew -

Sorry I didn’t check in during or after the storm. We made it through fine, with the exception of a small roof leak. As one would expect, most damage was along the coast; and musically speaking, a concert we were to attend after the storm was cancelled due to storm repair and clean up at the St. Augustine Amphitheater. My parents live a mile from us and across the street from a canal that runs off the St. John River. The end of the canal overflowed and ran down the street with a strong current, and two houses down a huge oak tree fell on a house. They stayed with us due to their proximity to water, and their house made it through fine as well. While we didn’t lose power, we lost cable and internet service through both our cable service (Comcast) and phone service (Verizon) for several days. On the plus side, I didn’t have to go into work for two days; one of which I worked from home and the other I could not because I couldn’t connect.

Sarah Jarosz/Parker Millsap Show –
As expected, the show was excellent. While I was extremely excited, almost to the point of giddy, to see Parker, Sarah was very, very good as well and Hubby especially loved her set. While Sarah is a great musician, I think Parker is true star with innate abilities.

Festivals –
Regarding: “It's interesting that the musicians decided to stick with the location instead of the festival/promoters in the SpringFest situation. Does the new location fit the festival vibe?” No, the new location definitely does not suit the vibe, and I was very unsure as to how they would make it work. My theory is that someone who worked with the previous promotors and had all the contacts took over the slot at the beautiful Suwannee Music Park. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out over the long hall. Regarding your local Americana Festival, sitting on the ground in the sun to hear artists you don’t know definitely doesn’t sound like a good time. Hmmmm. (Do tell . . . how did you insert that photo?) Also, I agree whole heartedly with your this-year/last-year assessment of the Americana Festival!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirit_of_the_Suwannee_Music_Park
http://www.musicliveshere.com/

Jack White –
Thank you so much for sharing those clips. I purchased just a few songs off his acoustic album I find it amazing and a real shame that PBS doesn’t air new the new Prairie Home Companion.

NEW MUSIC
Gillian Welch put out a 20th Anniversary version of Revival that contains different versions of the album’s songs as well as songs that didn’t make it on the album and were not later released.

Yep, I just can't get with the album. If Dwight didn't want to write new music specifically for a bluegrass effort then he'd have been better served to have covered classic bluegrass songs that he hasn't already done, or perhaps he could have done an album of rock covers like the version of Purple Rain.

Let's work up a list of what he should have done. I'll start.

BLUEGRASS STANDARDS
1. Sunny Side Of The Mountain

ROCK COVERS
1. Under My Thumb
